Welcome to Library

library is a curated collection of sources of information and similar resources, selected by experts and made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing, often in a quiet environment conducive to study. It provides physical or digital access to material and may be a physical location or a virtual space, or both. A library’s collection can include booksperiodicals, newspapersmanuscriptsfilmsmapsprintsdocumentsmicroformCDscassettesvideotapesDVDsBlu-ray Discse-booksaudiobooks, databases, table games, video games, and other formats. Libraries range widely in size up to millions of items. The word for “library” in many modern languages is derived from Ancient Greek originally meaning bookcase, via Latin bibliotheca. The first libraries consisted of archives of the earliest form of writing—the clay tablets in cuneiform script discovered in Sumer, some dating back to 2600 BC. Private or personal libraries made up of written books appeared in classical Greece in the 5th century BC. In the 6th century, at the very close of the Classical period, the great libraries of the Mediterranean world remained those of  Constantinople and Alexandria. The libraries of Timbuktu were also established around this time and attracted scholars from all over the world. A library is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, a corporation, or a private individual. Public and institutional collections and services may be intended for use by people who choose not to—or cannot afford to—purchase an extensive collection themselves, who need material no individual can reasonably be expected to have, or who require professional assistance with their research. In addition to providing materials, libraries also provide the services of librarians who are experts at finding and organizing information and at interpreting information needs. Libraries often provide quiet areas for studying, and they also often offer common areas to facilitate group study and collaboration. Libraries often provide public facilities for access to their electronic resources and the Internet. Modern libraries are increasingly being redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources. They are extending services beyond the physical walls of a building, by providing material accessible by electronic means, and by providing the assistance of librarians in navigating and analyzing very large amounts of information with a variety of digital resources. Libraries are increasingly becoming community hubs where programs are delivered and people engage in lifelong learning.

Prof. Dr Nusrat Shah

I am honored to join as a Vice Chancellor in Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) located in the historical city of Larkana, which lies very close to the ruins of ancient Indus Valley Civilization City of Mohenjo-Daro.

The SMBBMU has come a long way from the Chandka Medical College in 1973 to getting the status of University in 2008. Since then, it has expanded very fast with several colleges and institutes being its constituents and others being affiliated to it.

As a vice chancellor, I envision the university being transformed into a place of academic excellence which produces critical thinkers, competent health professionals and community leaders. The goal is to produce graduates who can provide quality care with empathy, compassion and understanding and are able to handle the social responsibility of looking after the health and wellbeing of local, national and global communities.

Continuous improvement in the quality of teaching, assessment, research, and clinical services remains at the heart of my entire efforts. This would require strategic investments in faculty development, strengthening online teaching environment; and exploring visiting faculty from different regions. One of the aspects of quality enhancement which needs attention is networking with digital education experts both nationally and internationally for partnership in developing innovative digital courses.

The world is witnessing Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) revolution in the form of digitalization, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic. This has changed the way students’ study and learn all over the world and in order to keep pace with the changing times we need to change the traditional lecture-based teaching to more interactive student-centered, skill-based and project-based teaching, with corresponding changes in assessment.

In this age and time, and particularly after the pandemic of Covid-19, the university must have a strong digital environment both for management as well as for teaching and learning resources. Providing strong digital eco-system including availability of adequate bandwidth for connectivity, IT manpower, equipment and back-up systems would remain a high priority for me. As the healthcare landscape continues to change, our future success requires an organizational commitment to innovation, collaboration, and fiscal stewardship.

At SMBBU, we promote the values of honesty, integrity, polite and caring attitude, collaboration, teamwork and self-accountability, and strive to create a positive learning environment. Along with academics we also encourage a host of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities in the form of sports, gymnasium, debates, exhibitions, and cultural, social and literary events, to encourage physical and mental health and wellbeing of students and to develop their holistic personality.

Finally, I wish you every success, and a comfortable and enjoyable stay at the university. Happy learning!
